A rest area near the village of Drislea

A rest area should actually serve as a place to relax after a long journey and not be the final destination for pets that are not wanted (anymore). But unfortunately this is very often the case.

Dogs, as well as cats, no matter what age, are simply thrown out of cars or dropped off at the kerb. These animals often wait days for their owners to come back and pick them up. Some sit in the same spot for hours. Others hide in the undergrowth or in the nearby woods and wait there. And still others run panic-stricken onto the busy country road to follow their owner. It is not uncommon for the animals to be hit by a car while trying to follow them and die on impact.

Another popular method of abandoning an animal is to put it in a canvas bag, tie it up and leave it somewhere. Often the animal does not have the strength or courage to bite its way out of its prison. Not all animals are found in time. Sometimes, unfortunately, help comes too late.

Anca has already been able to help some animals that were supposed to die at this resting place and bring them to safety. Most of the animals run joyfully towards Anca and do a real dance of joy. "Finally someone is coming". Some really try everything to get a lift. But there are others who sit in the bushes, frightened and unsure. Then it's a case of keeping calm and taking your time, even if Anca is supposed to be at work on time. The country road is so close to this rest area that there is always the danger of the animal running onto the roadway if you act too hectically. And just drive to work without helping the animal to get to safety? This is unthinkable and not an option for Anca.

But it's not only abandoned animals that take to the feeding station, but also the "old familiar" furry noses that come to this resting place to check out left-behind food or rubbish bags for something to eat. Every day in the morning they wait here for Anca to get their portion of food. And a few kind words, pats and a little encouragement. This is the highlight of the day for these animals. The joy is always enormous when Anca stops there and gets out of her car. Under her arm is a bag of dry food, tins of wet food, possibly also treats and in the other hand a large bottle of water.
